This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.

Part A: Curriculum Music

This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.

Music is well established across the school and is delivered via the timetable below –

EM to look at holding CPD for Primary Teachers to teach pupils Music in line with the national curriculum.

WVA buys into Musical Futures, a teaching resource that caters to the music curriculum across KS 2,3 & 4.

Qualifications delivered:

WJEC Entry Pathways Creative, Media and Performance Arts

Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Mus

Part B: Co-Curricular Music

This is about opportunities for pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.

Being a special school for SEMH and being fed by 12 different boroughs it is challenging to run clubs and concerts. A majority of our pupils are brought to and from school by taxi and this can also create challenges for pupils to access music outside of the core curriculum. However, that doesn’t stop us trying.

Concerts are put on at Christmas and this is performed during the school day, so that pupils can take part and still take their taxis home.

It is challenging for some of our Parent/Carers to attend concerts and shows, as they too live outside of the Sutton borough and so transport can be challenging for them and also as it is during the school day, some Parent/Carers are at work.

Pupils also, as part of their BTEC course, have to plan and deliver a show of some sort during the Summer Term.

As part of the Sutton Music Hub all pupils have the opportunity to play endangered instruments (Orchestral instruments). If they choose to be involved in this project, they then get an opportunity to play one instruments.

Pupils have the opportunity to take part in music during Golden Time and Enrichment.

Some pupils access additional music sessions during Target Learning Sessions.

We have Weekly Friday Break Time Music in the playground, where both pupils and staff dance, sing and generally enjoy music.

Staff perform a flash dance once a year in the playground for the pupils, who also join in.

Music is used in assemblies to help demonstrate the themes.

Part C: Musical Experiences

This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.

In the Future

This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.

We would like to continue to improve what we are able to deliver with regards to Music.

It would be great to have a Wandle Valley Band involving staff and pupils working together.

We plan to become more involved in seeing West End Musicals. This will allow us to then use the resources to do cross curricular work to support Wellbeing/Music in conjunction.

Further Information

All pupils learn how to play the Ukulele, Recorder and Keyboard as well as engage with music technology.

WVA has a separate music suit with a dedicated room set up for rehearsals with band instruments. There is also a room with Apple iMac computers where pupils are able to use musical software to compose.

We have a number of IPad’s specifically for Music Lessons, again allowing pupils a differentiated way to engage with music technology.

We share and work with the Sutton Music Hub, who have attended our school so that we can share good practice working with the types of pupils at WVA.
